Step 1- For this, you will need 1 cup white vinegar and a ½ cup of baking soda. Place the towels in your washing machine along with 1 cup of white vinegar. Begin a wash cycle on the hottest water setting that your machine provides.

Step 2- Baking soda wash: Once the wash cycle is completed, leave the towels in the washing machine. Put a ½ cup of baking soda over the towels and start a second hot water wash cycle.

Step 3- Dry it totally: After the second wash is done, ensure that your dry your towels thoroughly. You can either put them in the dryer, hang them on the clothesline, or the way you prefer.

This one-two punch of baking soda and vinegar should solve the odour and mildew issues. If you find the towels are still smelly after following these steps then, while repeating these steps again you should be careful. Now that you know how to restore the freshness in the towels, let us discuss how to keep them at bay. Here are a few tips using which you can keep your towels clean and smell fresh.

Ensure that your towels are totally dry before you fold them and put them away. Even a small amount of moisture can make the towels smell sour!
